Music is symbolic for many things. A path out of reality or back to reality, a language to the young, a method of distraction, but to some music is a way of narrating their life and emotions. To me music is all of this and more.
At times I sit alone with a massive weight on my shoulders and troubles run thru my mind like a violent current would after a storm. The only way to relieve the discomfort at times is thru music. As I sit in my room and daze off to songs I can relate to. So what type of music can I relate to? Born to a family with economic instability and a troublesome mind I think I can relate to most Rap and Hip Hop.
To some Rap and Hip Hop means gang affiliation, drugs, and violence, if you agree to that stereotype you can remain ignorant. Just because some people can’t relate to the genre does not meant they should critique it. To me Rap and Hip Hop is a poetic language for what people consider “the ghetto” or in someway what I call home.
Music to me is a companion and relieve. At times, when thoughts disturb my mind I sit with a pen in hand that will translate my emotions into words with a rhythm. As my hand flows over the paper and ink expresses everything in me my minds tension is eased and replaced by a certain comfort. Words keep accumulating and thoughts keep leaking thru the end of my pen telling what is perhaps my daily or life story.
As I read the product of hardships and problems I reflect on my past feelings and realize how much weight was transferred from my shoulders to a simple piece of paper. To me music is not just a pastime but a form of expression that has helped me analyze life one verse at a time.
Now I realize that without music that weight on my shoulders would have been unbearable.
